KOMO News
Washington Governor speaks with NBA Commissioner about return of Sonics
“The news also led to some buzz on social media. "SonicRCP" which is a dedicated Instagram page for the Supersonics and Seattle sports, told KOMO News:
"I’ve always thought the NBA would return around the 2030 season. The NBA taking this call in the first place in the midst of the trade deadline and so close to the All-Star break is definitely notable," he wrote, “Hopefully the Seahawks win the Super Bowl and Sonics get announced soon so 2026 can be known as the year of celebrations in Seattle."
Heart of a Fan
Supersonic: Finding a Way For What They Want To Say
“For almost two decades, it has left a void in what has
predominately been a basketball city, and instead of
abandoning our hoops culture, we have found that passion
through youth basketball, semi-pro leagues and of course,
our legendary Seattle Storm. The history of the Sonics
being taken from Seattle hasn't changed the relationship
between the team and the city. The passion has remained
strong and the fandom hasn't gone anywhere. Seattle has
been ready and is more than deserving of getting its team
back. Simply put, SuperSonics fans don't need to prove
themselves more than they already have, and it's the
league and the team that need to prove they're willing to
reward us for our undying loyalty."
"I have joked for years that if the Sonics come back, they could go 0-82 for half a decade and the arena would be packed and sold out every single night. In reality, it truly is all about effort. In an era of more teams opting for tanking, having a team that can be competitive in the playoff push would be an acceptable level of success for an early restart of the franchise. I do believe with the level of talent that comes out of the Seattle area and the appeal of the SuperSonics history, there will be at least some stars or borderline stars that would have interest in
playing in Seattle. For the city, the relationship with the team
will be passion that's unlike any other team in sports. Seattle
knows the pain of losing their beloved team and they'll never
take it for granted. Win or lose, having the NBA back in the city will not only create constant enthusiasm for fans, but will give the kids in the city more role models, give the community more opportunities, give businesses more exposure and give Seattle the final puzzle piece to make things whole again."
